The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ basketball team ended their post season play in the first round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association division three south sectionals losing to Apponequet 62-77.

The Vineyarders were seeded 12th and Apponequet was seeded fifth. Coach Mike Joyce said he was proud of his team’s effort and support of each other.

“If you’re going to lose, make sure to lose putting out your best effort, and I thought we did that,” he told the Gazette by phone on Friday. The team played a tight game keeping the score close for the first half. Coach Joyce praised senior Chase Silva’s 24 points and eight rebounds.

“Chase Silva played the best game of his life so far,” Coach Joyce said.

The Vineyarders downfall came with free throws. Out of 23 opportunities, the team made only nine free throws. But the energy the team brought to the court was the best of the season, Coach Joyce said.

“If we had that effort consistently we would of won maybe 15 games in the season,” he said.

With only three graduating seniors on the team, most players will be returning next year to build on this season. For now the boys will turn their attention to supporting the girls basketball team in the quarter finals of their post season play. The girls team plays Fontbonne on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy.
