Umbrella colors of summer brighten the beaches across the Island. Tim Johnson

Sunday, July 30, 2023

Now, as the midpoint of summer rushes toward us, it is apparent that the days are drawing in. Dawn is more grudging with its earliest light, and evening shadows grow long before we are quite ready for darkness to come. July arrived only a moment ago, but we blinked, and now the month is packing its bags and soon will depart.

Tuesday brings August, the fulcrum point of the summer. The month of July settled into an accustomed seasonal routine of spectacular weather, crowded beaches, teeming sidewalks, and the busy leisure — no contradiction there — of concerts, dining out, fishing, cookouts, socializing and guilt-free naps. Most Islanders joined vacationers in all those pleasures except the naps.

What would you do with an extra hour of daylight on a beautiful summer evening? August 1st sunset is at 7:59 proving, once again, that we are in the wrong time zone. We are at the extreme Eastern edge of the Eastern Time Zone which goes as far west as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We should be in the Atlantic Time Zone which would change that 7:59 into 8:59. Another hour of beautiful summer daylight.

Wouldn't that be so wonderful? I never thought about that. We really are in the wrong time zone.
