The weekend weather was delightful. A smattering of pumpkins, mums and Halloween displays are beginning to appear around town. We now have an early sunset and cooler temperatures and memories of a September that slipped by before you knew it.

Well, Sunday is the first day of the fall season and we are thankful for all of our summer memories as September is slipping away as quick as you can say Jack Frost! We know he is waiting just around the corner but it doesn’t seem possible with the beautiful Indian summer weather we are having. The shoulder season of transit service will cease on Oct. 8. Colleen Morris reports that Monday she will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day. Folks are busy harvesting the last of their vegetables from their gardens and what few berries that may still be available for canning. We are settling into our fall routines as the sun is now setting around 7 p.m.

We enjoyed a very nice Labor Day weekend — the unofficial end of the summer season. Cookouts and outdoor activities, including the beach, were the order of the day. Traffic was considerably lighter and parking spaces were not hard to find if you went into town.

Signs of fall are beginning to appear as the last gasp of warm moist air enveloped the Vineyard this past week. Canada geese are headed south each morning with time out for the last of their summer dips in the Mill Pond. The berries don’t appear to be as plentiful as last season and they are late.
