The Manuel F. Correllus State Forest on Martha’s Vineyard remains one of the six strongholds in Massachusetts for the whippoorwill.

Nearly two months after a string of northeasters battered the Island, environmental groups are still cleaning up thousands of downed trees.

Volunteers pitched in at the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest Saturday morning, marking Park Serve Day, a day that highlights commonwealth parklands.

Marking a first in the long history of the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, a charitable friends group has formed for the 5,000-acre forest.

Eclogists will lead a tour of the state forest on Thursday — rescheduled from Wednesday due to rain in the forecast. The tour begins at 9 a.m. at forest headquarters.
