At 4 a.m. on a cold November morning, Circuit avenue is empty. Not a car or a person is in sight. Just a fierce northeasterly wind ripping down the street. All the shops are closed up tight, except for one: Mocha Mott’s, where a dim light glows from its location below street level. Walking down the metal stairs, the vibration of loud music can be felt through your shoes. Inside, Scott Hershowitz, who is dressed in long shorts, a short-sleeved button-down shirt and turquoise high tops, is bopping around as though it is noon in the height of summer.

Elderly Driver Smashes Into Coffee Shop

An 86-year-old Pennsylvania man parking his car along Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs drove into the front of Mocha Mott’s coffee shop just before 3 p.m. on Monday. Although no one was seriously injured, the crash shattered the coffee shop’s plate glass window and clogged traffic for approximately 30 minutes.

Mocha Mott’s Cook Shows How to Make Feijoada

The Vineyard Haven Library Lecture Series will present a free cooking demonstration, Cooking with Bella: Feijoada the American Way, on Wednesday, March 26, at 4 p.m.

This will be the first of a new series of lectures planned for the afternoons.

From a long line of excellent cooks, Bella Felipe will teach participants how to make feijoada. Her grandparents had a coffee shop in Brazil, and now she is the Mocha Mott’s baker and soup maker (she makes feijoada the American way there almost every week).
