Recreational scalloping outside of Tisbury’s ponds is set to begin Oct. 19 and commercial scalloping Oct. 21, following a town select board vote Tuesday night.
Nov. 2 is the opening day for recreational scalloping in Lagoon Pond, with commercial scalloping to begin Nov. 4.
Opening day in Lake Tashmoo is Nov. 23 for recreational scalloping and Nov. 25 for commercial scalloping.
To protect eelgrass, dragging restrictions apply in both ponds, shellfish constable Danielle Ewart said.
Three areas in Lagoon Pond will be marked off with buoys as closed to dragging, while no dragging for scallops is permitted in Lake Tashmoo.
“You can go there and harvest them [if you] either dive or dip net,” Ms. Ewart said.
Also Tuesday, public works director Kirk Metell outlined a packed off-season of town projects.
“We’re planning on replacing 35 basins up on Edgartown Road [and] paving Renear, Cromwell and Beach Street Extension, after the water company has finished their water main replacement,” Mr. Metell said.
“The highway crew will be crazy working on all of these [and] the facilities department is ramping up as well,” he said, detailing a to-do list that includes new roofs for both town hall and the Owen Park bandstand, a new kayak landing at Lake Tashmoo and a picnic pavilion for the Lake street landing.
“This is probably going to be one of our busiest years,” Mr. Metell said.
The select board also appointed Morgan Reitzas as assistant harbormaster and heard a report from the town’s open space and recreation committee on a planned water trail for kayakers and canoeists that will include stops at conservation properties along town shores.
