Sail Martha's Vineyard inaugurates its 2020-2021 winter lecture series next week with an online talk on Alvin, the submersible vessel based at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Speaker Bruce Strickrott is the manager and chief pilot of WHOI's DSV Alvin Submersible Engineering and Operations Group. Alvin and its support ship, the R/V Atlantis, are owned by the U.S. Navy and operated as part of the U.S. National Deep Submergence Facility, headquartered at WHOI and funded primarily by the National Science Foundation and Office of Naval Research.

Mr. Strickrott joined the Alvin operations team in 1996 and has logged over 380 dives in Alvin, for a total time of more than 2,400 hours submerged over 100 days, according to an announcement from Sail MV. He has travelled extensively with the submersible team, supporting scientists from around the world and exploring some of the most remote deep-sea environments on the planet.

His online talk is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9. Upcoming talks are scheduled for the same time on Jan. 13, Feb. 10 and March 10, with topics to be announced.
