The Tisbury board of health meets Thursday to continue a discussion on whether to recommend that the town allow sports groups to rent Veterans Memorial Park this fall.
On Tuesday, the board voted to tell selectmen that the Tashmoo Spring property should not be used for wedding receptions, although wedding ceremonies may be permissible if the number of people attending meets state guidelines.
“The reception cannot be part of it,” health board member Michael Loberg said.
“People crash these things,” added member Malcolm Boyd.
Following the health board’s recommendation in March, selectmen banned all rentals of town property, including the park and the Tashmoo Spring building and grounds.
With Governor Baker’s Covid-19 guidelines eased in recent weeks, Tisbury health agent Maura Valley said demand for the properties is increasing.
“People are reaching out, looking to be able to do things that are allowed under the state guidelines,” Ms. Valley told the board of health at its regular meeting Tuesday afternoon.
Public works director Kirk Metell said numerous groups are requesting access to the park, which was reseeded over the summer.
“We have softball that wants to have a fall tournament,” Mr. Metell said. “There’s several different soccer groups that want to be down there . . . Everybody wants to be able to do some kind of form of play.”
The MV United youth soccer group has asked to rent the park for a clinic with the New England Revolution pro soccer team, Ms. Valley told the board.
“They’ve actually put together a pretty great Covid-19 control plan,” she said.
But board members said they wanted more time to review the state guidelines before deciding on what to recommend to the select board.
“Ultimately, it’s their decision,” Ms. Valley said. “You’re making a recommendation based on public health.”
Instead of calling a second meeting, which would require a 48-hour advance period for public notification, the health board recessed its Tuesday meeting to continue Thursday at 4 p.m.
