An expert from the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will attend a public meeting hosted by Martha’s Vineyard Airport commission Thursday to discuss the recent discovery of chemical contamination in groundwater near the airport.
Gerard Martin, director of waste site cleanup for the DEP, will update the commission and answer questions from the public, airport leaders said in a press release.
The meeting begins at 2 p.m. in the West Tisbury public safety building.
“I hope people leave with a feeling that their questions are being answered and their concerns are being recognized and taken seriously,” airport director Ann Richart said.
The chemical compound known as PFAS, found in firefighting foam, turned up in monitoring wells around the airport last spring. Subsequent testing this fall found unsafe levels of contaminants in some private wells south of the airport.
Bottled water is being provided to residents whose wells are affected, and ongoing testing continues by environmental consultants at Tetra Tech, who plan to submit a full report to the DEP in January.
The commission will conduct its regular business agenda Thursday following the update on water contamination.
