Salvage efforts were under way Saturday for a power boat that struck a jetty outside the Oak Bluffs harbor Thursday evening.
A family of four that was on board was unharmed in the incident which occurred at about 10 p.m. According to fire and ambulance chief John Rose, weather conditions were challenging for the large power vessel as it tried to navigate the entrance to the harbor from Nantucket Sound.
“It was pitch black, we had a strong northeast wind and a pretty good swell, with five or six-foot seas,” Chief Rose said. “The swells pushed him up onto the jetty, then he lost power. Because of the wind and level of the surf he hit the jetty another time, put a hole in the boat.”
Eventually the boat drifted onto the beach near the East Chop Beach Club, where emergency responders were able to get the family off the boat. No one was injured in the mishap.
Salvage crews were on the scene Saturday moving the vessel off the beach.
