Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School junior track star Mackenzie Condon placed 16th out of 45 runners in the 400-meter hurdles at the National Outdoor Track Meet last weekend in Greensboro, NC. Her time was 63:71, her second best time of the season, even in the sweltering 95 degree heat.
Condon’s family and MVRHS track coach Joe Schroeder were on hand to support Condon after a remarkable season full of records and medals. It is just her second year of high school track.
“She really doesn’t ever disappoint,” Mr. Schroeder told the Gazette. “She had a season like no other.”
Over the course of the spring, Mr. Schroeder said Condon broke four MVRHS track records, won three events at the Eastern Athletic Conference Championships and qualified for three events at the state track meet: the 400-meter hurdles, 100-meter high hurdles and long jump. She is the first member of the MVRHS track team to hold the honor.
She also won the state heptathlon (seven events over two days) and pentathlon (five events in one day) before the season started. Mr. Schroeder said he expects more great things next year as Condon returns for her senior season.
“She is easy to coach, has clear goals and wants to get better every day,” he said. “She’s really dedicated and that’s paid off for her.”
