Chilmark’s biggest thrill this week has to be the arrival and visit of the Stanley Cup to the Chilmark Community Center. It was the buzz for most of the day. Hooray to all those who got to see and touch!

The days of August have been humid and hot most of the time, with some spectacular lighting and thunder to complete the traditional August experience for New England, but in all, August is providing the vacations that most have anticipated all year.

Chilmark isn’t sporting any colorful fall leaves as yet, and, after the rains of Wednesday, there may not be many leaves left. It rained hard for several hours.

We miss the fishermen who were all over our beaches in the hopes of catching the big ones. Somebody must have, as the Derby is over for another year. Congratulations to all the winners.

Chilmark will have many choices of eating places this week. The air should be full of the good smells of food! The Galley opened yesterday for the season; the Bite will open today at 11 a.m.; the Tavern will open May 23 and the Home Port will open on May 25. The Menemsha Fish Market, Larsen’s Fish Market and the Menemsha Café are all already going strong.

Chilmark seems anchored, although we have been buffeted by strong winds for what seems like weeks but is really only days of this past week. The crane operators hard at work on the projects in Menemsha Basin continued through most of the blustery days, with extra care applied. As I write on Wednesday, the winds are still blowing with gusts over 30 but now the skies are bluewill it last?
