NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In the end, cooperating with the government
carried more weight for map thief E. Forbes Smiley 3rd of Chilmark than
the calls for punishment from the institutions he had wronged.

Sentencing Is Near in Map Theft Case

Federal authorities have asked that E. Forbes Smiley 3rd of Chilmark
serve more than four years in prison and be fined at least $10,000 for
stealing a rare 1578 map.

U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor said that although the court
should take Mr. Smiley's cooperation into account when sentencing
the felon next Wednesday, the court should not depart from standard
sentencing guidelines.

NEW HAVEN - Edward Forbes Smiley 3rd of Chilmark yesterday
pleaded guilty in federal and state courts in New Haven, Conn., to the
theft of rare maps from a Yale University Library - part of a
string of 97 maps that he stole between 1998 and 2005.

Chilmark Man May Plead Guilty in Rare Map Theft

A Chilmark man is expected to plead guilty next Thursday to one or
more thefts of rare maps worth hundreds of thousands of dollars,
according to published reports in Connecticut newspapers.

Both the New Haven Register and the Hartford Courant have reported
that E. Forbes Smiley 3rd, a dealer in rare maps who lives on North
Road, may make pleas in back-to-back appearances in U.S. District Court
and state superior court in New Haven.
