With the exception of the football team, which has three games remaining on its schedule, the regular fall season wrapped up last week.

The problem with streaks is that they must all come to an end. Even Joe DiMaggio had to strike out at some point.

Football plays its homecoming game (and final home game of the season) tomorrow against Medford at 6:30 p.m. Senior recognition begins at 5:30 p.m.

Sports action at the regional high school slowed this week, but the fields will again be busy following the Columbus Day holiday. Golf, boys’ soccer and field hockey all have home games this Tuesday, with golf continuing their home stand on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, cross-country returns to the Island for a dual meet against Somerset.

Next Thursday is, as everyone knows, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving parade in New York city. For the majority of us this mean a little couch time watching the floats roll by and the participants perform. But for Alley Ellis, an eighth grader at the Edgartown School, it means kicking it, literally, on national television.

As the Vineyard football team prepares to take on the Nantucket Whalers this Saturday in the final game of the season and the 33rd Island Cup, there is one underlying premise for fans, players and coaches alike to keep in mind.
