For the past month photographer Melissa Knowles has been in Tanzania helping out at Precious Project, a school and orphanage in the rural village of Nshupu.
The innocence and optimism of childhood are what stand out first in a new exhibit of portraits at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse curated by Media Voices for Children.
Media Voices for Children, a local nonprofit focusing on children’s rights, is hosting a photographic exhibit and film screening on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse art space.
Life Magazine photographer Gordon Parks gave a talk at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday night. For the Vineyard it was a first. The 79-year-old black artist not only in photography but in the fields of prose, poetry, movies and music stood before an audience of 150 people and said that he is creatively stronger than ever.
At every opportunity, the audience applauded. Included in a program of slides were not only photographs that are known around the world but images from his latest efforts, which will be published soon in a book.
Albert O. Fischer's photography show at the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse features scenes from his Island home. His interest in the craft began as a way to deal with the trauma of the Vietnam War.
