Costs for Edgartown School Prompt August Town Meeting

Edgartown voters are invited to a midsummer special town meeting to
tie up some loose financial ends for the Edgartown School construction
project.

Parents and teachers packed themselves into the community room at
the Edgartown School on Wednesday night to hear which of the three
finalist candidates for the principal position the superintendent and
school committee had chosen - but then learned that none of the
three had been chosen.

Much has changed between the time 54-year-old John W. Stevens graduated from the Edgartown School and yesterday, when he welcomed the students and parents on opening day and introduced himself as their new school principal.

But for the veteran educator, who comes from running large schools in Florida, the scene was familiar enough.

The Edgartown School will begin a pilot enrichment program next year aimed at students working at advanced levels in math — a program that, if successful, could be adopted by other Island schools.

The local school committee voted last week in favor of a one-year trial of a fifth through eighth grade enrichment program in response to requests from parents about meeting the needs of high-ability math students.

Edgartown School principal John Stevens has announced the honor roll for the third quarter of the 2011-2012 academic year.

Eighth grade high honors go to Renato Gomes, Samantha Hargy, Jared Livingston and Sara Poggi.

Eighth grade honors go to James DiMattia, Alexandra Ellis, Elliot Ferland, Olivia Green-Lingren, Elizabeth Hayman, Jacquelyn Hegarty, Marlla Lemos, Amadine Muniz and Ian Shea.

Seventh grade high honors go to Kylie Hatt, Erin Hill, Abigail Lively, Paulo Pereira, Sarah Pertile, Joshua Tate- Da Silva and Lucy Ulyatt.
