September Light on the Vineyard, an exhibition of works by Island plein air artists, opens Tuesday at the Dragonfly Gallery. The show runs through Sept. 27, and the opening reception is next weekend, Saturday Sept. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Leslie Baker: Landscapes and Studies is the name of the spotlight solo show that opened July 23 and will continue through August 6 at the Shaw Cramer Gallery at 56 Main street in Vineyard Haven. Ms. Baker is an Island artist, and, having taught at the college level, is accomplished working in a variety of mediums and subjects. This includes oil on canvas, watercolor, drawing and monotypes of landscapes, still lifes, portraits and book illustrations.

Artists Light Up Lunch

Vineyard artists Elizabeth Straton, with her daughter Suzanne, and Ellen McCluskey have decorated two of 80 lighthouse birdhouses that will serve as table centerpieces at Wellspring House’s Women Honoring Women luncheon on Monday, May 4.

Helping families light the way home is the theme of the luncheon, where 800 women are expected to be in attendance, including Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. wThe event will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Danvers, Mass.

Renowned Printmaker

On Saturday, August 15, the Granary Gallery in West Tisbury will welcome the renowned printmaker Lou Stovall with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

Born in Athens, Ga., in 1937, Mr. Stovall grew up in Springfield. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Howard University. Since 1962, he has lived and worked in Washington, D.C.

His drawings and silkscreen prints have brought him grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Stern Family Fund.

Mother and daughter artists, Gloria and Jennifer Burkin have a show of their new work, at The Martha’s Vineyard Bank at Bettlebung Corner in Chilmark, running from June 12 to June 19.

The Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown opened its latest exhibition last Sunday night with a well-attended reception for featured artists Anthony Benton Gude, Dylan Sean Murray, Amaru Pareja and Teresa Yuan.

As is the case with most Old Sculpin shows, the works on display put the spotlight on diversity, with established and emerging artists — working in various media — sharing space inside the cozy building on Dock street.

Islander Leslie Baker Opens Art Show at Copley Society

West Tisbury artist Leslie Baker recently opened a show of her landscape work at the Copley Society of Art in Boston. A painter, portrait artist and children’s book author, Ms. Baker’s plein air oil studies are well known on the Vineyard, where she has lived year-round since 1997. The Copley show is anchored by a sweeping triptych of Long Point Wildlife Refuge on a hazy, late summer day. The show opened on Sept. 11 and will hang until Oct. 8. The Copley Society of Art, founded in 1879, is located at 158 Newbury street in Boston.
