The Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner in Chilmark will host a free opening reception today, Friday, August 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. for an exhibit of Vineyard landscapes by Chilmark artist Linda Thompson.

The oil paintings depict a range of Island views, from the stillness of a sunset on the rocky North Shore to the colorful clusters of mailboxes along Island roads.

Louisa Gould Showcases New Artists: Spring Show

The Louisa Gould Gallery is celebrating the completion of its winter renovations, reopening today with its annual Spring Show.

The artists’ reception will be tomorrow, Saturday, May 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. with refreshments and appetizers created by chef Liberty Russell. All are welcome to kick off season.

Lanny McDowell is having an opening this week that can take place in anyone’s home or office. He has opened a gallery on the Internet showing his fine art avian photographs. Anyone can go there by pressing a few buttons on the computer.

Most Vineyard artists have openings at galleries. They schedule a day in the height of summer to roll out their work, send out a box full of invitations and wait for the crowds to come. A reception usually includes wine and cheese and then after a week or so, the work comes down.

“Art is a way of life in many ways for the family,” Michele Ortlip says. “My generation, the generation before me, the generation before them my grandfather’s father was an artist, my great uncle, my two aunts everybody.” It goes without saying that, included in the generation before her is Michele’s father, Paul Ortlip, the shining star of the family’s serious crop of artistic talent. The fourth generation of Ortlips, under custody of their father, grew up in a Fort Lee, N.J., home overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

It is a pleasure this season to see an exhibition of paintings in which the subject is a serious exploration of an artist’s personal landscape. The show of paintings by Sherrill Blalock opening tonight with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Louisa Gould Gallery is such an exhibition. Appropriately named Cabinet of Curiosities, the paintings represent a complex psychological story of the artist’s view of the world.

American Art Exhibit at Tisbury School

Through the effort of the Tisbury School librarian, Patricia Ryan, and a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Tisbury School is showcasing an exhibition, Pictures of America, which documents the history of America through major American artists and their work.

The posters not only feature famous paintings, but sculptures, photography and craft works. The exhibition will be on display for the month of November in the passageway between the school and the library.

The North Water Gallery hosts photographer David Fokos for an artist talk on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. Now living in San Diego, Mr. Fokos is back on the Vineyard, where he is most well known for his square black and white photographs with long exposures, ranging from 20 seconds up to 30 minutes.
