St. Patrick’s 5K

The annual St. Patrick’s Day(ish) 5K road race and fitness walk, a benefit for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club, is Saturday, March 28, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean View Restaurant and Tavern on Chapman avenue in Oak Bluffs. The 3.1-mile, USATF certified course loops around East Chop, promising scenic views for runners and walkers.

Vineyard Boys’ Basketball Team Finishes Season in Second Round of Tournament

Team Ending a dream season, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ basketball team on Saturday lost 92-75 to Wareham in the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament. With the loss the Vineyarders finish the season at 16-4, one of their best records in recent memory.

Striped Bass Bill Dead in the Water

A state legislator’s effort to make striped bass a recreational fish only is dead for now. The state’s Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture has sent the proposal back for further study.

The dream season for the the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ basketball came to end earlier today, as the Vineyarders lost a hard-fought and high-scoring thriller at Wareham by a final score of 92-75 in the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Assocation tournament.

Island Anglers Land Fair Share of Fishing Awards

ceremony Vineyard fishermen did well in the state’s annual saltwater fishing contest, with six Island anglers taking prizes at an event held on Valentine’s Day at the Eastern Fishing and Outdoor Exposition in Worcester.

It’s heady stuff for a high-schooler, but Solvig Sayre of Vineyard Haven remains grounded, having to balance the grueling demands placed on an athletic and academic all-star. While many of her classmates bravely fend off acute bouts of senioritis, Ms. Sayre has been windsurfing her way to the top of the national ranks, all while staying on the honor roll.

Vineyard fishermen make trip to Beacon Hill, protesting legislation to change the status of stripers

Don’t make striped bass a game fish. That was the message delivered last week by a group of Vineyard commercial bass fishermen who traveled to the state house in Boston to object to legislation that would do just that. The fishermen, most of them members of the Dukes County/Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Association, spoke out with one voice against House Bill 796.

Deer Count Suggests Herd Thrives Though Hunters Hurt This Season
