Islanders battened down the hatches, moved their boats to higher, dryer ground and boarded up windows Sunday as the sky turned gray and winds picked up in advance of Hurricane Sandy's arrival. The storm is expected to bring damaging winds for a period of 12  to 18 hours, high surf, coastal flooding and the threat of erosion, especially along south and eastern-facing coastlines.
