Robert Horace (Bob) Chidsey of Chilmark died at home on June 29. He was 93.

He was born in New Britain, Conn. and attended high school there. He went on to college at Ohio State University as a naval ROTC student, followed by a three-year tour in the U.S. Navy.

Bob was a hard worker in all of his endeavors. He held several positions in industry including division planner in the Hamilton standard division of United Technologies. He became a residential builder and developer in 1974.

For much of his life he was an avid fisherman and bridge player. In 1980 he and his wife Lydia became summer visitors to Martha’s Vineyard. In 1986 they built a summer home in Chilmark to which they moved after retirement in 1999. Bob became engaged in affordable housing activities and then served two years on the Chilmark finance advisory committee.

He is survived by Lydia, his wife of 63 years, his son John and his wife Barbara and their sons Daniel and Christopher, and his daughter Ann Chidsey Diaz and her husband Martine.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 8 at Grace Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Woodlawn and William streets in Vineyard Haven. A reception will follow.
