Mary H. Regan, a longtime resident of West Somerville and Edgartown, died peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital on Sept. 24 after a brief illness. She was 87.

She was born to James J. and Molly Scanlon Regan on August 14, 1935 in Cambridge. She was raised in Somerville and graduated from Matignon High School in 1953.

She attended the Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing and later received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Boston College and a master’s degree in nursing from Boston University.

For many years, she worked as a registered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, the former Presidio military base in San Francisco and for the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

Mary loved the beaches and tranquility of Martha’s Vineyard. She was a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Club and Friends of the Edgartown Library. She also loved the companionship of her family and friends and occasional trips to Bermuda. She was the sister of the late Francis X. Regan and his wife Nortrud of Tewksbury, and the late Roberta Randlett of Woburn.

She is survived by her sister in law Nortrud; her nephews James G. Regan, of New Ipswich, N.H., John F. Regan, of Billerica and Michael F. Regan of Tewksbury; nieces Carolyn M. Regan of Dracut, Kathy Lally of Bradford, Christine Pottle of Chelmsford and Jeanne Rainone of Tewksbury; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, brother and sister.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home in Tewksbury. A funeral mass will follow at St. William’s Church in Tewksbury at 11:30 a.m. She will be interred at St. Mary’s Cemetery, also in Tewksbury.
