Edmund A. Mahoney, 76

Edmund A. Mahoney Jr., formerly of Heckscherville, Pa., died on July 22. He was 76.

He was born in Pottsville, Pa. on August 31, 1945 and was the beloved son of the late Edmund and Rose Devers Mahoney. He was known as Mo and was also called Eddie.

He was a member of St. Kieran’s Church and a 1963 graduate of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary High School. He enlisted in the Marines and served in the Mediterranean and multiple tours of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged as a decorated sergeant in 1967. His last assignment was with the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force at Camp Lejeune.

He owned a scuba diving business and loved living and diving on Martha’s Vineyard. He attended the Culinary Institute of America and worked in the hospitality industry in New York city and Florida. He returned to Schuylkill county for his retirement.

His family and friends will remember him for his quick wit, devoted service to our country, generosity, cooking skills, love of reading and history, great conversations and vivid storytelling. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his siblings Margaret Mahoney, Joseph Mahoney, Mary Holobetz and Anne Glose and her husband Herb. He was adored by his nieces and nephews Colleen Derfler, Jennifer Woodson, Ron Schwartz, Katie Porrino, Meghan Holobetz, Herbie, Lauren and Patrick Glose; as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews Dev and Corey Woodson, Jack and Sean Derfler, Avery and Marie Schwartz, Ava, Max, Cory and John Porrino, and Jack and Colin Glose.

He was predeceased by his brother Baby Patrick Mahoney, sister Barbara Schwartz, and brothers in law Ronald Schwartz and John Holobetz.

Visiting hours will be held from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the Church of St. Patrick in Pottsville, Pa., followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. He will be interred with military honors at St. Kieran Number 2 Cemetery in Llewellyn, Pa.

Ed and I worked together in the 80s at Edgartown Marine. I was a Launch Operator and Ed was the diver who tackled complicated underwater repair projects on boats, moorings, and the docks. Ed always spoke favorably of his rich life experience and, even many years after his experience in Vietnam as a Marine, Ed retained his military bearing: he was polite and conversational, he took exceptional care of his equipment (including his tan Chevy van which he stored his SCUBA gear in), and his general sense of personal accountability. From time to time, Ed would come down to the dock at the foot of Main Street and take a spin through the harbor with me on the Launch. I learned a lot from Ed and have thought about him many times over the years. I was saddened to read his obituary but I am happy to have had the opportunity to work with him and learn about his perspective on life. Semper Fi, Ed.
