Marion (Johnson) Strauss of Oak Bluffs died peacefully on Wednesday, May 7, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was 90.

Marion’s husband Paul, to whom she was married for over 60 years, predeceased her in 2013.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1923 in Waltham, to Elmer and Elizabeth Johnson. She graduated from Waltham High School in 1941, the Massachusetts School of Art in 1945, and was an art teacher at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, Conn. Marion and Paul raised their three sons in Redding and southern California.

Marion began coming to the Vineyard over 60 years ago. She and Paul bought a home in East Chop in 1982 and moved here full-time in 1992. For many years she helped organize the All-Island Art Show. She was a talented artist and won many awards over the years in a variety of mediums.

Marion loved the Vineyard, thoroughly enjoyed the creative process of her artwork, and was a loving mother, grandmother and wife. Her smile and laughter will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her son Eric and his wife Debbie and their children Erica and Steven, her son Robert, and her son Russell and his wife Karen and their daughter Rory. She is also survived by her sister Phyllis and brother Stanley.

The family will hold a private service.
