Marjorie Smith died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 24 at her daughter and son in law’s home in Edgartown. She was 82.

The only child of Wilma and George Elliot Smith, Marjorie was born on Dec. 1, 1931 in Queens, N.Y., and was raised in Great Neck, Long Island. She attended William Smith College, where she majored in sociology, and went on to work as a secretary at an engineering firm.

Marjorie and her former husband, Paul Vansant, had five children together and lived in many cities throughout the Northeast and Midwest. A gifted artist with a taste for the finer things, she especially enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including good food, conversation, music, sending greeting cards and spending time with family and friends.

She is lovingly remembered as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin and friend.

Marjorie is survived by four of her children and their spouses: Susanne and Joseph Feeks, Robert and Laura Vansant, Charles and Kavita Vansant, and Jim and Ting Vansant. Her youngest son, John, died last June.

She is also survived by her daughter in law, Gail Vansant; her cousins Gus, Mary and Ellen; her grandchildren Carly, Meghan, Kathryn and Menka; her great-grandchildren Evelyn and John, and Ting’s daughter, Tanya.

Her funeral mass was held at St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown. Interment followed in the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown. Donations may be made in her memory to the Pond Home, 189 East Street, Wrentham, MA 02093.
