Yvonne LaBrecque, formerly of Vineyard Haven and West Hartford, Conn., died at home in Portland, Ore., on Oct. 11. She was 94.

Yvonne was a frequent visitor to the Island for many years. In 1982 she became a year-round resident following her retirement from teaching French at Central Connecticut State College. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for a number of Vineyard organizations, including the Vineyard Haven Public Library, the Friends of Family Planning, the Community Solar Greenhouse and the League of Women Voters. Yvonne was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society, and served a term as church secretary. Her greatest pleasures in life were good books, good music and, most of all, good conversation — in French or English — with her many friends.

Yvonne was the beloved wife of the late Louis Charles LaBrecque and mother of the late Yvonne LaBrecque Cherish. She is survived by her grandchildren, Melissa Ehn and husband David Landau and Jeremy Ehn and ex-wife Karen, all of Portland, and her great-grandchildren Cory Zuber, Charlie Ehn and Henry Ehn.

A memorial service for Yvonne will be held in the spring. If you’d like to receive details once they are available, please e-mail LaBrecque.Memorial@gmail.com.
