Jane Cole Bunzel Scott of Pacific Palisades, Calif., died suddenly on Oct. 11, 2012, 10 days short of her 83rd birthday, quickly succumbing to a stroke that started that day on the tennis court. Jane summered on the Vineyard for many years, usually in Edgartown or Chilmark, and was great friends of many Vineyard summer people and residents including Ralph and Eleanor Graves.

Born in Baltimore in 1929, she grew up in Plainfield, N.J., attended Dobbs School and graduated from Wells College. She met her husband Peter Bunzel on the Vineyard when Peter was working as a young reporter for the Gazette. (Peter’s parents Bunny and Pep Bunzel were longtime summer residents in Edgartown.) Jane married Peter in 1952, and she is survived by their three sons: Rob Bunzel of Piedmont, Calif., Jeff Bunzel of New York city and John Bunzel of Los Angeles.

The late Gazette publishers Betty and Henry Hough were godparents to Rob and Jeff and were a vital part of Bunzel family life and Jane’s connection to the Vineyard through Henry’s death in 1985. Jane continued coming to the Vineyard regularly, bringing her children and their families, and was planning to do so again for summer 2013.

Jane and Peter lived in New York, Seattle and Los Angeles, and ultimately divorced. In 1981, Jane married Robert Scott, who died in 2006. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and three stepchildren: Ward, Jeff and Margot Scott.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 21, 2012 at The Parish of St. Matthew in Pacific Palisades.

She will be greatly missed around the Island, in Seattle, Los Angeles, and New Jersey. If any Gazette reader seeks more information abut Jane, please email her son Rob at rbunzel@pacbell.net.

Donations in her memory may be sent to the Sherriff’s Meadow Foundation, 57 David avenue, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
