Rose Goodwin died peacefully at home in the early morning of May 23. Her daughter Constance Goodwin and her son in law Richard Cascarino were with her in the home they all shared in West Tisbury. She was 91.

Rose was born in Manhattan on Dec. 12, 1920. Her parents Amadeo and Accursia Sclafani moved their large family to Brooklyn to a home that was abundant with good food, friends and family.

As a young woman, she was the executive assistant to the president of Rogers Peet Company where she met the love of her life, A. Paul Goodwin. They married in 1951.

She returned to a professional life 15 years later to work for the Staten Island Advance, first in the morgue and subsequently as assistant to the editor. She also went on to become the paper’s “Mrs. Fixit.”

Her recent years living on the Vineyard were happy ones. She could be seen with friends at the senior centers, enjoying Richard’s flower and vegetable gardens, watching the hummingbirds, and delighting in everything and everyone. Her laugh filled a room. Her smile was tender. Although she had dementia, her sense of humor and kindness was always present.

Rose was predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers and sister. She will be interred with them at Calvary Cemetery in New York.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard.
