John J. Borges, 65, Was Fireman, Minister, Biker

John J. (Papa John) Borges Jr., 65, of Acushnet died at home on Monday, April 5, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Sheila D. (Grant) Borges, who is a former resident of Edgartown.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Irene (Alezander) Borges and John J. Borges Sr., he lived in the Acushnet area all his life. He was an ordained minister and assisted in many charitable causes. He also served as a second class fireman for the Acushnet Co.

He was president for 18 years of the Independent Bikers Federation and belonged to the Lakeville Eagles. He played guitar and sang for many years and played karaoke for three years until his sickness. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Donna Robichaud of California, Darlene Rymszewicz and Lorri Borges of New Bedford, Amy Borges-Nunes of Fairhaven and Pam Donnelly of New Hampshire; six sons, John J. Borges 3rd of Fairhaven, Snake S.W. Borges, Jimmie Borges, Kevin Borges and Darren Borges of New Bedford and Kenneth Galley of Boston; a sister, Linda Ostrander of Middleboro; a brother, Joseph Costa of Oklahoma; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.
