Joseph R. Montesion Had a Love for the Sea

Joseph Robert Montesion of Falmouth died Monday, Dec. 29, at home. He was 60.

Mr. Montesion was born on Oct. 10, 1943 in New York in the borough of Queens. He was the son of Edward Montesion of New York and was predeceased by his mother, Madline Pacheco.

He lived in Rockway Beach in Queens and was a graduate of Far Rockway High School. He summered with his family on Martha's Vineyard since he was a child. Joseph was a resident of Oak Bluffs since he was 17 until three years ago, when he moved to Falmouth.

He worked as a swordfisherman and then as a mason for Fred Thifault's company, Island Masonry, and was also self-employed.

Joseph loved the sea, fishing and shellfishing.

He is survived by his father; three sons, Joseph and Tony Montesion of Florida and Shane Montesion of Oak Bluffs; one daughter, Meaghan Montesion of Oak Bluffs; a granddaughter, Bella Jo Pereira; his brother, Edward Montesion of Edgartown, and his companion and friend of 13 years, Patricia Walkden of Falmouth. He was the brother of the late Elaine Kulvany, who died in June.

His funeral was held Jan. 3 in St. Augustine's Church and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
