Marjorie Mayhew Edwards Was Raised on the Island

Marjorie Mayhew Edwards, nee Marjorie Bowman, died Saturday, July 19, at Windemere Nursing Home in Oak Bluffs, where she was a resident for seven years. She was 85 years of age.

She was born on May 22, 1918 in Clinton, the daughter of Warren Bowman and Hilda (Ripley) Bowman. She was raised on the Island by her aunt and uncle, Walter and Laura Ripley, in Oak Bluffs.

She relocated to New Bedford and New London, Conn., for 40 years before returning to Martha's Vineyard. Marjorie was employed by Hartford National Bank and Trust in New London and Niantic, Conn.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Robert Edwards of Oak Bluffs; her two sons, Kenneth of New London, Conn., and Robert Jr. of Hilton, Va.,; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and her cousins, Carolyn and Dick Brown.

Her funeral service will be held in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, July 23, at noon officiated by Rev. Arlene Bodge. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Oak Bluffs. Visiting hours are one hour prior to the service.
