Marguerite Jones Pope Enjoyed Century of Life

Marguerite Jones Pope died Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Henrietta Brewer House in Tisbury, at the age of 100 years.

Marguerite was born on Feb. 9, 1902 in Newton, the daughter of Gardner I. Jones and Elizabeth Damon. She was educated in Newton and was graduated from Vassar College in 1924.

She married Daniel S. Pope Jr. in 1927; he was a manufacturing representative for a toiletry company. In 1937 they moved to New Haven, Conn., and Marguerite remained there till her husband's death in 1984. She then lived with her daughter in Syracuse, N.Y., until moving to the Vineyard in 2001. Mrs. Pope had previously summered on the Island for a number of years.

Mrs. Pope was patriotic, and belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and also the New England Mayflower Descendants. She enjoyed writing poetry and jingles, but above all else she loved to be with her family.

Her daughter, Barbara B. Pope Peckham of Oak Bluffs; her two sons, Daniel S. Pope III of Palmyra, New York and Robert G. Pope of Colorado; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren survive her. Her twin sister, Natalie Jones, and her brother, Damon Jones, predeceased her.

The funeral service is private and the family requests donations be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
