Adelia Barry, 98, Served Faithfully in Her Church

Adelia Barry of Bradenton, Fla., died on August 6 at the age of 98.

She was born on July 7, 1904, one of three daughters of Norma and Joseph Miller. She grew up in Pennsylvania and moved to New Jersey upon her marriage to Vincent Umstot. She was a homemaker and worked in department store merchandising. Her first marriage ended in divorce.

She married Clarence Barry in 1945; he died in 1977.

She moved to the Island with Mr. Barry in 1947 and enjoyed the friendship and warmth of Island life. She worked as a bookkeeper for Barry's Auto Electric. She joined the Methodist church in Edgartown, sang in the choir, played the organ and was a Sunday School teacher. She was also active on the Island in the Girl Scouts and the American Legion. She cherished her memories of Barry's children and grandchildren growing up on the Island.

She is survived by her three children from her first marriage: Constance Kammer of Edgartown and New York city, Neal Umstot of Hendersonville, N.C., and Garth Umstot of Edgartown and Bradenton, Fla. She also leaves five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at the New West Side Cemetery in Edgartown at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Edgartown United Methodist Church, Box 1745, Edgartown MA 02539 for the church's organ fund.
