Stella Waitzkin was one of the Island’s most noteworthy and prolific artists. Studying art in the 1950s in New York city, she focused on painting with Hans Hoffman and life drawing with Willem de Kooning. In the late 1960s she moved to the infamous Chelsea Hotel, where her apartment/studio became a gathering place for artists, jazz musicians and poets. Selected sculptures and drawings by Ms. Waitzkin will be featured at A Gallery on Uncas avenue in Oak Bluffs from July 19 to 31, with the exhibit’s opening reception on Saturday, July 19, from 5 to 7 p.m.

In 1958 Ms. Waitzkin was introduced to the Vineyard on a road trip with her son, author Fred Waitzkin. In 1980 she began spending three to four months each year on the Vineyard in a cottage in Chilmark, until 1990 when she bought a house of her own on Music street. She lived and worked there for longer and longer each year, until her death in 2003.
