More than a dozen Steamship Authority crossings have been canceled Monday due to the weather and crew shortages.

The Island is under a gale warning throughout the day, with the National Weather Service predicting up to seven-foot seas and 40-knot gusts. The whipping winds forced the Steamship Authority to cancel several trips aboard the Martha’s Vineyard, Island Home and Woods Hole ferries.

A crew shortage aboard the ferry Martha’s Vineyard prompted the boat line to take employees of the Sankaty freight ferry, canceling the Sankaty’s planned trips throughout the day.

Steamship Authority spokesman Sean Driscoll said there was a last-minute employee absence, causing the personnel shuffle.

The gale warning is in effect through Tuesday afternoon. The Steamship Authority warned that cancellations could continue and said the ongoing construction in Vineyard Haven on one of the boat slips was also presenting additional challenges.

“Please be patient and our personnel will work their hardest to get everyone where they need to be safely as soon as possible,” the Steamship Authority wrote to customers.
