The season of Jewish High Holidays begins on Friday, Sept. 15, with the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center and Chabad on the Vineyard each holding public services.

The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center is holding a Rosh Hashanah celebration on Sept. 15 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., with Rabbi Caryn Broitman presiding and live music performed by cantorial soloist Rabbi Jonathan Lipnick, violinist Yaeko, guitarist Eric Johnson and percussionist Anthony Esposito. Services on Saturday, Sept. 16 start at 9:30 a.m., with a children’s service at 10 a.m. for ages five through 8. The holiday closes on Sunday Sept. 17 at 9:30 with a buffet lunch in Owen Park following. Seating at the Hebrew Center is limited and all participants must register in advance.

Chabad on the Vineyard celebrates the new year at its Causeway Road, Vineyard Haven location starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, followed by a community holiday dinner. Services on Saturday Sept. 16 and Sunday Sept. 17 begin at 10 a.m., with a children’s program beginning at 11 a.m. and a shofar sounding at 11:30 a.m. A kiddush lunch follows services on both days. Advance reservations are required and can be made at ChabadontheVineyard.org.

Observance of Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 24. The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will hold a Kol Nidre service starting at 6:15 p.m., followed the next day by services beginning at 9:30 a.m. The day will conclude with a final shofar blast at 7:16 p.m. and a meal to break the fast.

Chabad will observe Yom Kippur with a 7 p.m. service on Sunday, Sept. 24. The following day, services begin at 10 a.m. The observance ends at 7:16 p.m. and a buffet break-fast will follow.
