A cyanobacteria bloom in Squibnocket Pond has rendered its waters unsafe for both humans and animals, according to an advisory made by the Chilmark board of health.

The board of health has issued a “red-grade” warning for the pond, advising against all contact with the water for humans and their pets, as well as advising against eating shellfish from the water body.

The advisory was issued through MVCyano, a collaborative project between the town boards of health and the Great Pond Foundation. Red-grade warnings have also been issued for James Pond, Chilmark Pond and Tisbury Great Pond.
