The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking comments on Eversource’s plans to build a fifth undersea cable in Vineyard waters.

Eversource says it is proposing to build the new electric cable, as well as replace one of the existing ones, in order to deliver reliable and safe electricity.

In a statement sent to the Gazette, Eversource spokesman Chris McKinnon said the new undersea cable responds to an increased demand for electricity on the Island.

“With any project, it is standard practice to obtain all necessary permits from any appropriate local, state or federal agency, which includes the Army Corps of Engineers in this case, before we commence work on the new and replacement cables,” he said.

One of the cables will run about 4.5 miles through Vineyard Sound, beginning off Mill Road in Falmouth and ending near Squantum avenue in Tisbury. The other will run about 6 miles from Surf Drive in Falmouth to Eastville avenue in Oak Bluffs.
