A family on Lucy Vincent Beach Thursday found what is believed to be illegal drug packaging that washed up in the surf.

At about 5:40 p.m., Chilmark police were called to the scenic beach for a report of a suspicious object that had come ashore.

The item, which has not been officially identified as drugs, was about 100 yards east of the beach entrance and was initially found by a family on the beach, according to a statement from the department.

Police took the package, which “was consistent with illegal drug packaging,” the statement read.

Police inventoried and photographed the item and transferred it to the Cape Cod office of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The police department referred all further questions to the DEA. A DEA spokesperson said the agency did not have further information Friday morning.

Beach staff closing the gate to the residents-only beach Thursday night declined to comment.
