After nearly 40 years at the Wakeman Conservation Center, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation is initiating plans to relocate its office to an existing maintenance facility in West Tisbury.

Located at 78 Campbell Road near the Tiasquam river, the new property was previously used as a maintenance building, and includes office space, a garage, a workshop and a two-bedroom apartment with potential to be used for staff housing.

“What has essentially happened is that we have outgrown [the Wakeman Center]” said Adam Moore, executive director of the conservation land trust. The nonprofit is still in the process of purchasing the 7.5-acre property for about $2 million, Mr. Moore said.

Established in 1983 as a collaborative office space for Island conservation organizations, the Wakeman Center also currently serves as headquarters for organizations, including the Vineyard Conservation Society. Sheriff’s Meadow joined the center in 1985.

The other organizations will stay at the Vineyard Haven center.

“There will be other existing members of the Wakeman center that might have a little more room to grow,” Mr. Moore said. “And then there are other nonprofit organizations that might find a home at the Wakeman center to be just the right thing for them.”

Mr. Moore said the foundation plans to complete the purchase by the end of the year, before moving into the property sometime in the summer of 2024 after renovating the ground floor to include more office space. The nonprofit will also need approval from the West Tisbury planning board before moving into the factiliy and it is currently undergoing the site plan review process.

“We’re very excited about this,” Mr. Moore said. “We think this is a great reuse of an existing facility so there would be no new construction.”
