A Dukes County grand jury returned indictments Monday for an Oak Bluffs man accused of raping a child.

Chad Atkinson, 31, was indicted on charges of aggravated rape of a child with force, and kidnapping, according to court documents.

Mr. Atkinson was originally arrested in September 2022 after a 16-year old told Tisbury police that he forced her to perform sexual acts.

The victim told police officers that she had met Mr. Atkinson after a car show in Tisbury on Sept. 18, 2022, according to a Tisbury police report.

While the girl was walking along Main street in Vineyard Haven, a man allegedly drove up to her, took her phone and wouldn’t give it back. The victim told police that she got in the car to try and get her phone back, and the man drove to Lambert’s Cove Road.

The victim repeatedly asked to go home before the man pulled over and forced her to perform sexual acts, according to the police report.

Police later identified the man as Mr. Atkinson and they arrested him after he was seen driving around a Vineyard Haven cafe where police said he had arranged to later meet the victim.

Mr. Atkinson pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned in Edgartown District Court on Sept. 26, 2022.

Following the indictment, the case will now proceed in Dukes County Superior Court. A further court date had not been set Monday.
