The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School kicked off a weekend of celebrations Friday with Class Night, a presentation of scholarship awards to members of the graduating class of 2023.

Graduating seniors gathered with their friends and families at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs to receive scholarships totalling $1,205,491 from more than 100 Island organizations and community members.

Director of guidance and counseling John Fiorito opened the evening by commemorating Mary Korba, the regional high school’s scholarship program coordinator, presenting her with flowers and leading the audience in a roaring round of applause.

“This is the person that almost single-handedly arranged this year’s scholarship program,” he said. “Her genuine passion for our students has made her the perfect person for this position.”

Principal Sara Dingledy took the stage next to honor this year’s donors.

“You’re dream makers for this group of students,” she said. “The future of these students is really built on the shoulders of your generosity.”

The first award was presented to Linus Munn from the MVRHS Memorial Fund, which was created in memory of past regional high school teachers. When Ms. Dingledy identified Linus as the son of two regional high school science teachers, the crowd erupted in applause.

Throughout the evening students walked up to the stage with their graduation gowns flowing, to hug, shake hands and kiss the cheeks of their donors, whose representatives ranged from nonprofit institutions, small and large businesses, and scholarship programs such as MVYouth the Vineyard Vision Fellowships.

Several donors presenting memorial scholarships used their moment on stage to remind the seniors to celebrate their accomplishments safely.

“Every year, I say to myself I’m not going to do this anymore” said Tricia Bergeron, whose son Eric Bergeron died in car accident his senior year of high school. “And then I think, I’ve got to do this. It’s important. Just please, do not get into a car without your seatbelt on. Enjoy your night, enjoy your weekend, but be careful and call somebody if you need a ride.”

On Sunday, the regional high school class of 2023 will gather at the Tabernacle once more for graduation, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
