Tisbury needs more restaurants, apartments and year-round jobs, according to the results of a recent community survey from the town’s master plan steering committee that drew 437 responses.

Islanders responding to the survey also ranked Tisbury on a variety of measures, from its overall appearance to the way it’s run, and indicated how they think the town can improve.

Asked to choose up to three housing priorities for the community, more survey respondents preferred apartments (230), single-family and two-family homes (170) and senior housing (143) than townhomes or condominiums (136), “top of the shop” housing above businesses (121) or live/work units (101).

A similar question about businesses revealed that 239 people hunger for food service establishments, with arts and entertainment drawing 188 choices and personal services, such as hairstylists, in third place with 136.

The responses also revealed a lack of confidence in local governance, with only 12 people saying that town government and committees are effective, 173 indicating that they’re somewhat effective and more than 200 people saying the town bodies are not effective.

Sixty per cent of those who took the online survey identified themselves as year-round Tisbury residents, while 32 per cent said they live there seasonally and a handful of others indicated they work in the town.

Full results from the survey are posted on the master plan website at tisburymasterplan.com.
