The Chappy Community Center will host Tick Talk with Dick Johnson on Thursday, August 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. Find out everything that you wish you didn’t have to know about the Lone Star tick. Dick has been investigating ticks on Chappy for many decades and has plenty of insight into their behavior and the dangers that they present to humans and pets.

The annual meeting of the Chappy Community Center will be held on Saturday, August 13, starting at 9 a.m. This is an important in-person meeting as this is a voting year. After two summers of subdued activity because of the pandemic, the center has sprung back to life with great enthusiasm. Come to hear the board lay out plans for next season and for the long range financial wellbeing of the center.

You can hear the musical group The Cucumbers while you have dinner from El Gato Grande food truck at the community center on Wednesday, August 17 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Jon Fried and Deena Shoshkes started The Cucumbers way back in the 80s in Hoboken, N.J. They describe their music as indie pop. See their website thecucumbersmusic.weebly.com for a history of their musical journey and a sampling of their creations. You can catch their afternoon show at the West Tisbury Library on Tuesday, August 16, starting at 4 p.m.

Don’t miss the final classical concert of the summer series on Saturday, August 20, with celebrated clarinetist and composer Derek Bermel in collaboration with the next-generation Jasper Quartet string ensemble. They will perform an all-contemporary musical program.

So far, hurricane season has been uneventful. But keep in mind that it officially started only five weeks ago; Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and continues through November 30.

Hurricane Bob was labeled the earliest hurricane in New England history when it thrashed the island on August 19, 1991. Hurricane Sandy came through at the very end of October 2012. Lately, the storms that have affected the islands have formed right on our doorstep over the Bahamas.

Google “spaghetti models” to get the earliest warnings about potential tropical storm formation. The term spaghetti refers to the multitude of tracks predicted by the dozen different computer forecasting models.

It seems that there is always one track aimed directly at Chappy.
