Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

In the late fall of 2001, I attended my mother Lucille Engley’s funeral at the Methodist church in Vineyard Haven. The late Dorothy Bangs and her husband Stuart were there. At the reception I sang to Mrs. Bangs what I learned when I was in the fourth grade. Mrs. Bangs wrote the music and my fourth grade teacher the late Alice Campos wrote the words.

Oh, We’re from Martha’s Vineyard

We love our Island home.

The salt spray will stay with us

wherever we may roam.

From East Chop to West Chop

Throughout our seaside town

How beautiful our isle of dreams

resort of great renown.

This song has remained with me ever since I learned it in 1957.
