A Vineyard Haven man was arrested late Saturday after six homes were broken into and vandalized, according to Tisbury police.

Patrick Lucas, 31, has been charged with multiple counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime to commit a felony, vandalism and larceny, acting Lieut. Bill Brigham said in an email Sunday afternoon.

According to the email, police received a call from a homeowner on Franklin street after she heard noises and encountered a man in her home. The time of the call was not specified by police.

“Upon seeing the homeowner, the male left. We then began receiving multiple calls from people in the Franklin street, Greenwood avenue and Main street neighborhoods that someone had been in their homes. Damage had been done to all the residences,” the lieutenant wrote.

Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, West Tisbury and state police responded to a request for assistance and began searching the area, according to the email. Mr. Lucas was subsequently found, arrested and transported to the Edgartown house of correction where he was charged and detained, according to police.

“At least six homes were broken into and vandalized that we know of,” Lieutenant Brigham wrote. He said police are asking residents in the area to check their homes for damage or missing items. “We also want to remind everyone to always be sure to lock their doors and windows,” the lieutenant wrote.

The incidents remain under investigation, the lieutenant said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Charlie Duquette at the Tisbury police department. The telephone number is 508-696-4240.
