Arnie Reisman’s excellent article about James Thurber reminded me of a story my father told about his time working as an assistant to A.J. Liebling, the legendary editor of The New Yorker. Liebling asked my father to pick Thurber up. When my father couldn’t find Thurber, and reported this to Liebling, he yelled: “Goddamit! You’ve lost Thurber.”
