Oak Bluffs police and a state police detective unit are investigating a stabbing that occurred in Oak Bluffs late Sunday night, according to releases from both agencies.

In a brief statement sent by fax to the Gazette, Oak Bluffs police said a 36-year-old male had been transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital for stab wounds.

“On Sunday evening at 23:16 hours [11:16 p.m.], Oak Bluffs police and EMS were dispatched to Oak Bluffs avenue in front of the police station for a male party who was suffering from stab wounds to his abdomen,” the statement said. “The 36-year-old victim was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where he was stabilized and subsequently Med-flighted to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.”

The police statement offered no other details about the incident, but said the matter was under investigation.

Hospital spokesman Marissa Lefebvre confirmed that the individual was med-flighted to Boston Sunday night in critical condition.

Reached by phone Monday, the Oak Bluffs police department and spokesman for the Cape and Islands district attorney’s office Tara Miltimore could provide no further information.

State police spokesman David Procopio said in an email that the state police detective unit attached to the DA’s office and the barracks were assisting local police.

“The investigation is active,” Mr. Procopio said.
