On Monday the waves of South Beach took down the calm of Lambert’s Cove as best beach on the Island, as voted by Martha’s Vineyard Magazine readers, who evidently like their surf frothy.

In a down-Island, up-Island fishing charter smack-down it was the plucky Skipper coming in first as it bested Tomahawk Charters out of Menemsha.

And so it went on Monday, with the first day of Best of the Vineyard prizes being revealed online for the Great Outdoors category. Each morning at 9 a.m. another category’s winner takes the podium. Tuesday is lodging day with two Edgartown old-school juggernauts going head-to-head in two categories.

For best hotel in general excellence category it was the Harbor View taking the top spot, with the Charlotte Inn coming in second. But the results were flip-flopped for those looking for a romantic getaway hotel. The Charlotte Inn is the favorite for lovers, while the Harbor View Hotel took runner up status.

For those on a budget, the Edgartown Commons is tops, with the Island Inn in Oak Bluffs taking second place in keeping the wallet intact.
