Vaccination numbers on the Vineyard inched up a little more over the weekend as a mobile vaccination bus began making rounds, offering free shots.

On Saturday 50 shots were administered at the Island Food Pantry in Oak Bluffs, and 57 were administered at the TestMV site at the regional high school, according to Mary Breslauer, a spokesman for Island Health Care (IHC).

On Sunday the bus made stops at various churches and the Steamship Authority terminal in Oak Bluffs, where a steady stream of people lined up for the vaccine.

The bright yellow Yankee bus is set up as a free walk-in clinic, with no pre-registration required. The clinic is offering one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccines as well as the two-dose Pfizer vaccine. The bus will return to the Island in three weeks to administer second shots.

The mobile clinic is being jointly organized by the Island boards of health and IHC, the Island’s federally qualified community health center, and aims to step up vaccine availability for Islanders unwilling or unable to register for shots at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The hospital also has an ample supply of vaccine and appointment availability (registration is at mvhospital.org).

The mobile bus clinic will be on-Island through Wednesday this week.
